The introductory course teaching Scandinavian log building using round timber. We will cover the following:

– Practical and theoretical introduction to roundwood scribing and log cabin building using both traditional and modern tools
– Making friends with the axe and the chainsaw
– Safety considerations
– Log selection and preparation
– Point foundations
– Initial layout
– Structural considerations
– Wall construction
– Door and window reveals
– Theoretical introduction to roofing geometry and construction
– Suggested projects for further work and practice
– And more

Cost: sliding scale £0 – £650 (6 places)
– 4 places at £650 for seven days excluding camping and food
– 1 place at £350 for seven days excluding camping and food
– 1 place at £0 for seven days excluding camping and food

Pre-requisites for the course:
Chainsaw ticket (cross cut and maintenance minimum)
Appropriate PPE
Practical ability

Bring if you have:
Chainsaw
Spirit level, pencil and measuring tape
Chisel, gouge and mallet
Hewing axe / broad axe / felling axe / etc

Food, accommodation and travel:
The courses all take place at Nantcellan Barns.

Camping and food is available on site, please book in advance, or cook your own. If a soft bed and central heating is more your bag there are plenty of B&B options nearby.

There are train links to Aberystwyth from anywhere in the UK. From there it’s a half hour bike ride to Nantcellan.
